Licensing

The Herndon Children’s Center is licensed through the Virginia Department of Social Services to operate a child care program serving 120 children aged 3 months to 5 years of age.

The HCC earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)—the nation’s largest organization of early childhood educators—in July 1996. Our current accreditation runs through June 2021.

The National Academy of Early Childhood Programs—a division of NAEYC—administers a national, voluntary, professionally sponsored accreditation system for all types of preschools, kindergartens, childcare centers, and school-aged childcare programs. NAEYC-accredited programs have demonstrated a commitment to providing a high quality program for young children and their families.

  • The accreditation process examines the total program, but greatest emphasis is placed on the quality of interactions among staff and children and the developmental appropriateness of the curriculum—what really happens to the children.
  • Health and safety, staffing, staff qualifications, physical environment, and administration are all reviewed during accreditation, but primary consideration is given to the nature of the child’s experience.

The HCC is endorsed as an Eco-Healthy Early Childhood Program, which recognizes that HCC is committed to providing a healthy, safe and green child care setting for the children and families served.
